Semi-Permanent Makeup
Questions about cosmetic tattoo, treatment planning and touch-ups
What is semi-permanent makeup?
Semi-permanent makeup, also known as cosmetic tattoo, is a treatment designed to enhance features such as brows, eyeliner, lips and hairline with implanted pigment. The result is intended to soften and define the features while reducing daily makeup time.
What cosmetic tattoo services do you offer?
Vicky Chen Studio offers cosmetic tattoo services including Eyebrows, Eyeliners, Lips, Hairline and selected Removal or correction consultations where suitable. You can view the full service overview on the Semi-Permanent Makeup page.
Do I need a consultation before cosmetic tattoo?
A consultation is strongly recommended and may be required before treatment. This allows time to discuss your goals, suitability, shape, colour, previous cosmetic tattoo work, expectations and aftercare.
How many sessions do I need?
Cosmetic tattoo treatments commonly require an initial appointment and a touch-up appointment. Where included, the touch-up should usually be booked within the recommended 6–12 week period. Additional touch-ups may be recommended depending on healing and pigment retention.
How long does semi-permanent makeup last?
Longevity varies by client. Factors such as skin type, lifestyle, aftercare, sun exposure, skincare products and individual healing can all affect how long the result lasts. A refresh appointment may be recommended over time.
Does cosmetic tattoo hurt?
Discomfort varies from client to client. Many clients find the treatment manageable, but sensitivity can depend on the treatment area, individual pain tolerance, skin condition and other personal factors. The process and comfort options can be discussed during consultation.
Can old cosmetic tattoo be corrected?
In some cases, old eyebrow tattoo or previous cosmetic tattoo may be corrected or refreshed. However, suitability depends on the colour, saturation, shape and condition of the existing pigment. A consultation or clear photos may be required before confirming whether treatment is suitable.
Can old eyebrow tattoo be removed?
Removal or correction may be available depending on the condition of the existing tattoo. Multiple sessions may be required, and results can vary. The studio can advise after reviewing the area.
Eyebrow Tattoo
Preparation, healing and aftercare for brow treatments
Do I need to remove my natural eyebrow hair before eyebrow tattoo?
No. Existing eyebrow hair does not need to be removed. During mapping, the brow shape is designed around your natural features and existing hair where possible. Only stray hairs outside the mapped shape may be cleaned up if needed.
What should I avoid before eyebrow cosmetic tattoo?
Before eyebrow cosmetic tattoo, clients are usually advised to avoid alcohol and caffeine for 24 hours before the appointment. It may also be recommended to avoid blood-thinning medication or supplements such as aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E or fish oil before treatment, unless medically required or advised by your doctor.
It is also usually advised to avoid tanning or sunburn before treatment, avoid waxing, threading, tinting or harsh brow treatments close to the appointment, and avoid retinol, strong exfoliants or active skincare near the treatment area beforehand. Please follow the specific pre-care instructions provided by the studio and professional medical advice where relevant.
What should I avoid after eyebrow tattoo?
After eyebrow cosmetic tattoo, it is important to keep the area clean and follow the aftercare instructions provided. Clients should avoid picking, peeling or scratching the treated area.
It is also best to avoid swimming, sauna, heavy sweating and strong sun exposure during the healing period. Avoid applying makeup or strong active skincare directly on the treated area while healing, avoid rubbing or touching the brows unnecessarily, and do not pick scabbing or flaking.
What is the eyebrow tattoo healing process like?
Healing varies, but brows often appear darker at first before softening as the skin heals. Some flaking or scabbing may occur. The colour and shape continue to settle over several weeks, and the final healed result is usually assessed around 4–6 weeks after treatment.
Why does pigment retention vary?
Pigment retention can vary depending on skin type, oiliness, lifestyle, aftercare, sun exposure, skincare products and individual healing. This is why a touch-up may be recommended and why results cannot be guaranteed.
Lip Blush
Lip blush preparation, healing and suitability
What is lip blush?
Lip blush is a cosmetic tattoo treatment designed to softly enhance the natural lip colour and shape. The goal is usually a more balanced, fresh and wearable tint rather than a heavy lipstick effect.
How should I prepare for lip blush?
Hydrated lips usually heal better, so clients may be advised to keep the lips moisturised before the appointment. It is also recommended to avoid alcohol and caffeine before treatment and to follow any pre-care instructions provided by the studio.
If you have a history of cold sores, you should seek medical advice before lip blush, as cosmetic tattoo treatment may trigger an outbreak. Antiviral medication may be recommended by a medical professional.
What should I avoid after lip blush?
After lip blush, avoid picking, peeling or scratching the lips. Avoid applying makeup to the lips while healing, and avoid swimming, sauna, heavy sweating and strong sun exposure during the healing period. Use the recommended aftercare balm if provided.
How long does lip blush take to heal?
The surface healing stage may take around one to two weeks, but the colour can continue to settle over several weeks. The final result may look softer than the initial appointment, and a touch-up may be recommended.
Who may not be suitable for lip blush or cosmetic tattoo?
Some clients may not be suitable for cosmetic tattoo, including clients who are pregnant or breastfeeding, under 18, prone to keloid scarring, taking certain medications, have recently used Accutane, or have relevant medical conditions. Where relevant, please seek medical advice before booking. Suitability will be discussed before treatment.
Eyelash Extensions
Questions about lash styles, retention and aftercare
What lash styles do you offer?
Vicky Chen Studio offers natural, hybrid and volume eyelash extensions. The style can be adjusted depending on your eye shape, natural lashes and preferred finish. You can read more on the Eyelash Extensions page.
What is the difference between natural, hybrid and volume lashes?
Natural lashes create a softer and lighter result. Hybrid lashes add more fullness while still looking balanced. Volume lashes create a fuller and more defined finish.
How long do eyelash extensions last?
Eyelash extensions usually last through the natural lash growth cycle, but retention varies depending on aftercare, lifestyle, skin type and how quickly your natural lashes shed. Refills can help maintain the look.
How should I care for my lashes after the appointment?
Avoid rubbing your eyes, be gentle when cleansing around the lash area and avoid oil-heavy products near the lashes. Specific aftercare advice will be provided during your appointment.
Can I wear mascara with eyelash extensions?
Mascara is usually not recommended with lash extensions, especially waterproof mascara, as it can affect the extensions and make cleansing more difficult.
